Prize Allocation

Points Mean Prizes

Points are awarded for:

  • Your "As Sailed" position.
    • Did not start ~ 1 Point *
    • Retire ~ 4 Points
    • Finishers ~ Points according to "As Sailed Position"
6 Points Plus "No of Finishers" minus "The As Sailed" position
Last one to finish receives 6 Points!

  • Your sponsorship.   (£500 of sponsorship will gain you 25 points ~ pro rata).

This is the essence of the event. It combines sailing skills and the requirement to generate monies for charities. Broadly, a very high level of sponsorship has the potential to lift an entrant's prize allocation by approximately one third of the ladder.

* The known and deliberate implication of awarding 1 point to entrants that "Did Not Start" is that, if they have excellent sponsorship, they will have a chance of being allocated a prize!

Changes to be introduced in 2010

  • The points awarded for sponsorship has been increased (now £20 per point).
  • To qualify for a prize you must have a minimum of £50 sponsorship (see here for reasoning).

Ties

  • Initial Tie break ~ Sponsorship.
  • Then ~ Date of entry.

Brief History

The prize allocation system has been subject to a process of gradual change. The changes have arisen primarily in response to the need to make the prize structure more closely reflect the main aim of the event which is to raise monies for charities. The changes to the prize award system that have been introduced have therefore focussed upon creating an incentive for entrants to acquire sponsorship.  It has to be said that there have been a number of "road bumps" along the way!

Another significant reason for the introduction of change is the need to contain (and keep simple) the administrative workload.  In 2008 and 2009, where the prize ladder was lengthened by the addition of extra prizes of £25, quite unexpectedly, there were a number of charities that had to be constantly chased to claim their prize!  (For a full explanation of how prizes are distributed see "Broad Procedure" on the in the Charities section.)

The prize allocation procedure is also used to encourage of "early entry" by having the earliness of entry used as the final rule for breaking ties. (We also have a differential entry fee and different requirement for a minimum sponsorship (£100) for very late entries.)

Team Event

In order to qualify for a prize in the team event, each boat in the team must have a minimum of £50 sponsorship.
