Event Instructions

NINTH EDDYSTONE CHARITY SAILING PURSUIT
SATURDAY 17TH JULY 2010

EVENT INSTRUCTIONS

1. WELCOME TO THE EVENT

A welcome to all of you taking part in the 9th Eddystone Charity Pursuit. We hope you have an excellent days sailing. Arrangements are very similar to the previous year's event with each Yacht given a start time relating to its handicap rating which is based on the assessed performance of the yacht. Please let us know if you have any children acting in participating crew role. The prizegiving will be at the RWYC- there will be a small Jazz band providing entertainment from 18:30. Supper, at £5 per crew member, will start to be served also at 18:30. (Please let us know if you have any particular dietary requirements). The prize giving will start at 20:00.

2. ON THE WATER

Please remember this is a Charity Fund Raising Sailing event which is sailed under the International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea (Colregs) over written by the Dockyard Port of Plymouth Order 1999. Entrants are actively encouraged to use their engines when they deem it to be good seamanship for their particular boat and crew so to do. It is left to the integrity of each entrant not to use their engines for advantage.

3. YACHT IDENTIFICATION

a) As in previous years, each yacht is asked to fly an Eddystone Pursuit Event Flag, throughout the day, from the back stay (or suitable position aft) or if unable to do so from the Port Shrouds. (This is to ensure that the flag can be clearly seen when finishing!) There will be a new set of flags for the 2010 event. Event pennants will be issued from the Club rib just prior to the start.

b). Returning Pennants. In order to minimise administrative costs for the event it is our intention from now on to standardize the design of the pennant so they can be re-used in subsequent years thus saving an appreciable amount of money. Skippers are asked to bring their event pennants to the prize giving in the evening and hand them back at the RWYC. Please DO NOT TAKE THEM AWAY at the conclusion of this year's sail. If skippers are unable to return the pennant on the night they are asked to mail them to the RWYC.

4. START TIMES

Each yacht will be given a handicap rating and specific start time established by the RWYC. The earliest start time is likely to be 09:00 and most entrants will have started by 12:00. Specific start times together with a starting code letter will be published on the Eddystone Pursuit AND the RWYC websites. The times can also be obtained by phone during working hours, after 15:00hrs on 15thJuly. A list of times and code letters will also be available to view on the Club notice board.

5. START

A letter board, showing the next starting code will be displayed on the Club Balcony for 2minutes before each start time; at each start-time a sound signal will be made and the associated letter board removed. Premature starts should NOT restart but will be given an appropriate time adjustment by the Event Officer.

6. THE START LINE

An extension of a line through the RWYC Flagstaff at Queen Anne's Battery and a black and yellow marker post in front of the Club. The outer limit of the line is an orange mooring buoy. (Note: This is the same as last year.)

7. COURSE

From the line, leave all Cattewater mooring buoys to port, Plymouth Breakwater to Port (Western Entrance) round Hand Deeps Buoy (position 50˚ 12.5´N 004˚ 21.0´W) to PORT (See Notes). Return leaving Plymouth Breakwater to Starboard (Western Entrance), all Cattewater moorings buoys to starboard and then to the RWYC Line passing West to East.

Notes: Some points to bear in mind to enhance safety:
1. Boats approaching the start area to keep clear of boats starting.
2. Boats starting are encouraged to have their engines started, ready for immediate use until well clear of the start line. See section 2 above
3. The event is sailed under the International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea.
4. Remember when overtaking and particularly when approaching Hands Deep Buoy, to keep clear of the boat ahead.
5. The tide at Hand Deeps is broadly slack at lunchtime before staring to run westward at about 1400.

8. FINISHING

a).When competitors have passed Mountbatten Breakwater on the return to the finishing line they shall contact the Race Officer on VHF Channel 72 to identify themselves, especially those yachts that have not got a sail number.

b).The Finishing Line is as the Start Line but crossing West to East.

9. BERTHING

There may be limited short term berthing at Queen Anne's Battery for distant visitors. Yachts requiring short term berthing should contact the Marina on channel 80 and fly the Eddystone Pursuit Flag during their stay.

10. TIME LIMIT

Any yacht that has not completed the course by 17.00hrs should note the GPS position at that time and send it by text to mobile 07866420576 stating the yacht's name, the lat /long position and whether the yacht was proceeding to or from Hand Deeps buoy. Yachts will be regarded as finishing the event and will be awarded a "place" broadly based on distance sailed at that time. Yachts should then return to home by the quickest means.

11. NON PARTICIPATION / RETIREMENT

The decision for an individual entrant to take part, start and continue is entirely at that entrant's discretion. In order that rescue services are not alerted unnecessarily, all entrants withdrawing from the event or retiring after starting must inform the sailing officer as soon as possible. In the first instance (on the day) by text to mobile 07866420576 stating the yachts name and either "Not Starting" or "Retired". If this communication has not been acknowledged within a short time, then a radio call or other voice communication should be initiated.

12. COMMUNICATION

The Club will monitor VHF Channel 72 during the event. If necessary the sailing officer may be contacted on mobile 07866420576 or RWYC 01752660077. The RWYC support rib, JESTER, can also be contacted on VHF Channel 72.

13. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

a) Every yacht should be adequately insured and have a minimum Third Party Liability of £2,000,000.
b) Every yacht to be seaworthy, suitable to undertake an offshore passage and carry adequate safety equipment (to the equivalent of IRC cat 4).
c) Every yacht to have a keel(s), engine and be capable of reefing.
