EDDYSTONE CHARITY SAILING PURSUIT

The result of the 2010 Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit was a truly staggering £46,120 raised on behalf of 41 charities by the 81 yachts that entered. This must be one of the largest amounts raised by any charity event in Plymouth. It is a credit to all those who took part, and shows people's inherent generosity even in today's difficult financial climate. This amount is still growing and with late sponsorship still being collected will probably end up close to £47,000. Every penny of this amount goes to the 41 charities.

With the exception of conditions in Plymouth Sound, where the wind was fickle, once outside the Breakwater the wind filled in with a fine 18 knot breeze from the south-west giving a true beat out to the Hand Deeps Buoy with a run back to the finish, and, apart from one or two gear failures and two boats where good seamanship indicated retirement, everyone finished the course. All the competitors were welcomed back to the RWYC Clubhouse afterwards for a supper where all the food was provided through the generosity of Sainsbury's and their Armada Way Store and they are to be greatly thanked for this wonderful gesture.

The supper was followed by the prize distribution, where the leaders were awarded engraved glass ware made by Dartington Glass and received notification of the prize money they had won, including a ~Special £500 Prize awarded in memory of Eleanor Creeke whose Charitable Trust provides all the prize money. This was awarded to a cancer sufferer, sailing in the event for the first time, and carrying more then £2,000 of sponsorship on his boat in aid of Plymouth Hospice.

The charities nominated must work to 'benefit the human condition'. One has benefitted by more than £10,000 and a number by several thousand pounds. All in all everyone enjoyed the event enormously and were truly amazed by what they had achieved, particularly as Plymouth is not a 'rich' area and most of those taking part are just ordinary people with ordinary yachts.

INITIAL BASIC PRESS RELEASE

The event is sailed out of Plymouth under the auspices of the Royal Western Yacht Club and invites yacht owners covering a wide spectrum of different types of boat to nominate a charity and then sail in the 26 mile off shore event on behalf of that charity, having raised sponsorship for their entry, the only condition being that the chosen charity "shall benefit the human condition"!

The event is now in its 9th year of sailing and last year's event raised £36,450 on behalf of 42 charities with an entry of 90 boats. Over the period of its sailing the total amount raised for charity is approx. £170,000.

Embedded within the Individual Event is a Team Event where all 3 boats sail for the same charity. The boats sail for prize money which is donated by a private charitable Settlement who in 2010 will provide £12,500 all of which must go to charity.

First Prize in the Individual event is £1,000 and in the Team event £1,250. It is a truly Corinthian event which last year saw over 300 people out on the water crewing the 90 boats their ages ranging from 5 to 85! The Royal Western host a supper and Prize giving in the evening and it is day of fun with a great purpose. In its format it is an event which appears to be unique in the U.K.

At the moment, only the bottom picture, which is slightly smaller, works as intended!

Update 23rd July . . .an even better answer now known . . . . but once again I am not able to tackle the task today ~ I wil try to get to it before the week-end (I am at the moment sorting out getting the prizes distributed!!)
